TMJ relief

TMJ Therapy by Gables Exceptional Dentistry

The Temporo-Mandibular-Joint (TMJ) is located on either side of your head and connects the lower jaw to the skull. Various nerves, muscles, and other tissues surround the joint and it allows the jaw to move in all directions: up, down, forward, backward and sideways. Painful symptoms result when the joint is out of alignment. This condition and the symptoms associated with it are known as TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. For some people, the joint has never been in the correct position and for others it has come out of alignment as a result of trauma, a bad bite or poor dentistry. A joint out of alignment puts extra strain and stress on all the nerves and muscles surrounding it, causing them to strain even more when the jaw is resting.

TMJ Symptoms

  • Headaches including migraines
  • Neck or back pain
  • Numbness in the hands
  • Earaches
  • Trouble and/or soreness in opening and closing the mouth
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw
  • Pain in the jaw muscles
  • Soreness in the jaw area, sometimes extending to the face

TMJ Treatments

It is important to have the exact source of the TMJ symptoms diagnosed. Because the pain associated with it can arise from a bad bite, missing teeth, arthritis etc, a detailed examination including advanced neuromuscular techniques and equipment is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatments.

The most common source of TMJ pain can often be treated by: replacing missing teeth, moving teeth, adjusting the bite, filling gaps between teeth, etc. There is no one solution that is appropriate for every situation so it is important to consult with your neuromuscular trained dentist to see what may be causing your pain. Sometimes a special mouthpiece is used to stabilize the bite preventing clenching or grinding that may be contributing to the problem. The main objective in treatment should be to maintain the joints in their optimal position at all times. At Gables Exceptional Dentistry, we use the latest technologies such as 3D-CT scan imaging of the joints, TENS device to relax the strained muscles and diagnose the bite, jaw tracking computer technology, sonography, etc.

We are one of the few practices in the world that have this newer technology and are specialized in providing leading care to correct and prevent such dysfunction.
